Coconut Fiber (Cior)

Coconut fiber (or Coir) is recommended as a substitute for peat moss because it is not only free of spores but allows for more sustainable harvesting techniques. The byproducts of making coconut fiber are biodegradable pith and sawdust, but now those byproducts are being used as much, so the entire process is becoming more and more eco-minded. Our creative crafter makes uses of the awesome material & minimize wastage while we get our favorite coconut milk or Santan for our yummy Nasi Lemak:-)

Coir fibers are found between the hard, internal shell and the outer coat of a coconut. The individual fiber cells are narrow and hollow, with thick walls made of cellulose. They are pale when immature, but later become hardened and yellowed as a layer of lignin is deposited on their walls. Each cell is about 1 mm (0.04 in) long and 10 to 20 μm (0.0004 to 0.0008 in) in diameter. Fibers are typically 10 to 30 centimeters (4 to 12 in) long. Brown coir harvested from fully ripened coconuts is thick, strong and has high abrasion resistance. It is typically used in mats, brushes, and sacking. The coir fiber is relatively waterproof and is one of the few natural fibers resistant to damage by salt water.

Pineapple Fiber (Piñatex)

Piñatex is a natural leather alternative made from cellulose fibers extracted from pineapple leaves

Piñatex is created by felting the long fibers from pineapple leaves together to create a non-woven substrate. The pineapple food industry globally produces 40,000 tonnes of waste pineapple leaves each year, which are usually left to rot or are burned. Our creative crafters reuse this natural material to craft products & minimize wastage, this contributes to an eco-friendly & sustainable lifestyle.

Approximately 480 leaves (the waste from 16 pineapple plants) are needed to create 1 square meter of material. The material uses the longleaf fibers which are separated by the pineapple farmers for additional income, the leftover biomass from the process can be used as a fertilizer.

Because Piñatex is produced from a waste product it requires no additional land, water, pesticides or fertilizers. It also avoids the use of toxic chemicals and heavy metals used in animal leather production and has none of the wastage of leather caused by the shape of the animal's skin.
